5 Signs it's Time to Upgrade Your Jewelry Box

Keeping your jewelry organized in a jewelry box might seem easy at first, but if you don't stay on top of it, you could end up with a tangled pile of junk instead of treasured pieces.  Read on for 5 signs you should upgrade.

Your jewelry box is precious. It's where you store your most prized necklaces, rings, diamonds, bracelets, and earrings.

Sadly, though, you have a situation. The box is full;more than full, really. It's full of junk.

What should you do? It may be time to organize and upgrade. Read on for our five handy signs you need a new jewelry box.

1. The Drawers/Doors Don't Close

When you first got your jewelry box, the many compartments, doors, and drawers were very useful. You found all sorts of great areas to stash your valuable jewelry.

Now, the drawers barely shut. You can't get the doors to close. It feels like your box is overflowing with stuff.

If you're going through this situation, it's best to consider a revamp

2. There's Just No More Room

You can't help it. You love jewelry. You see a beautiful bangle, a shining pendant necklace, or a stunning statement ring and you have to have it.

There's nothing wrong with having a collection. In fact, collecting jewelry is a hobby that could pay off big.

There's one issue, though. You need space to store all your jewelry.

Rings should go in a special container. This prevents them from bumping haphazardly into each other, which could damage them.

Necklaces should be hung on hooks or chains. This reduces tangles (more on this momentarily). Bracelets should be stored away from necklaces.

You once had room in your old jewelry box to neatly arrange all your valuables. That's no longer the case, though.

In fact, you've searched the box thoroughly, inside and out. There's just no more room to put anything.

You have to protect and store your jewelry though, so what can you do? It's definitely time to upgrade if you've reached this point.

3. Your Jewelry Is Tangled

Once space in your jewelry box became tight, you started becoming messier about things. You kind of just tossed the jewelry in wherever there was room. If you couldn't find room, you made it.

Now, going through the box, all your necklaces and bracelets are a tangled mess. The chains have weaved and knotted themselves together.

You look at your precious jewelry and you feel distressed. It could take hours and hours to untangle all those chains. You may even need the help of a professional.

After all, if you were to yank on a fragile chain too hard, it could break. That would mean you'd have to shop for a replacement, which can be costly.

Jewelry tangles do happen, even in a spacious box. Those tangles are often simple to resolve, though.

If you're cramming jewelry in already tight corners though, you could just find your favorite pieces are irretrievably tangled.

4. You Can't Remember the Last Time You've Worn What's in There

Once you get past the tangled necklaces and bracelets, you notice something. You can't quite remember a lot of jewelry in the box.

If you have a large jewelry collection, this could happen. You fall in love with a piece, buy it, bring it home, and wear it once. Then you stash it in the jewelry box and forget all about it.

Now that you're finally organizing your jewelry, a lot of pieces are unrecognizable. You're sure you bought them, but you don't remember when or why.

Maybe you'll fall in love with these old pieces all over again. That said, this is a sign of a much bigger problem.

You need a jewelry box that lets you see all your favorite baubles. These should be displayed front and center. If certain pieces of jewelry are getting lost in the shuffle, you should strongly consider getting a new box.

5. You Could Harm the Value of Your Jewelry

Jewelry is incredibly valuable. That almost goes without saying. There's the initial value, and then the increased value over time.

The older jewelry is, generally, the more valuable. As long as it's made of real materials (like silver and gold instead of cubic zirconia) and it's cared for, you can sell it back for a pretty penny.

If you weren't organized, didn't have enough storage, or if you crammed in jewelry even when you had no room, you could do your collection a huge disservice. You could decrease the value of the jewelry without even meaning to.

We're talking about more than broken chains here. Dings, scratches, scuffs and other damage is more likely when two pieces of jewelry are left to bump into each other each time you open the box.

If the damage doesn't buff out, then the jewelry is almost worthless. No seller will want to pay its full value if it's not in great condition.

This doesn't mean your jewelry must be pristine. You can and certainly should wear your favorite pieces as often as you like.

If you are interested in someday selling your collection though, that collection needs to be tenderly cared for. Even if you plan on passing down your jewelry to your children, they're going to want beloved relics, not damaged goods.

Your jewelry is one-of-a-kind. In most instances, replacing it will be impossible. To prevent that, get a bigger jewelry box so you can take care of your valuables the right way.
