The demi-fine jewelry industry was valued at about $151 million in 2018 and is expected to nearly triple by 2025. What is demi-fine jewelry and why is it so popular?

Demi-fine jewelry starts with luxurious, high-quality materials like sterling silver, 18k gold, precious stones, and semi-precious stones. These materials are crafted into designs that are both modern and timeless. Most importantly, these gorgeous pieces are set at price points that don't break the budget.

Buying your first piece of demi-fine jewelry is thrilling. The question is, how do you take care of it once you take it home?

Jewelry care is an important part of building up a collection you can be proud of. Read on to learn everything you need to know in our guide to demi-fine jewelry care.

Storing Demi-Fine Jewelry

When you're storing your demi-fine jewelry, there are two things you should keep in mind. The first is that you want to protect the metals from damage caused by oxygen, water, and any other metals. The second is that you want to make sure that the stones don't get scratched by coming into contact with hard or rough surfaces.

Storing Sterling Silver

Sterling silver can tarnish over time, especially when it is exposed to air and light for prolonged periods of time. When you aren't wearing your silver demi-fine jewelry, you want to make sure that you're storing it in an air-tight space. In a pinch, you can seal it into a sealable plastic bag after pushing out any excess air.

Ideally, you'll want to keep your sterling silver jewelry in a tarnish-preventative bag designed for silver storage. If you can, include a piece of soft polishing cloth in the bag as well.

Storing Gold

Gold is less likely to become tarnished than silver, but it's still smart to store it in a safe space. You can use the same kinds of tarnish-preventative bags to store your gold demi-fine jewelry, but there is one very important catch.

While gold is in many ways more resilient to tarnishing and damage than sterling silver, it needs to be isolated in storage. Storing gold alongside silver is never a good idea, as both can cause damage to one another.

That being said, you can store more than one gold piece together. For example, you can keep two or three gold rings or bracelets in the same storage bag, as long as there is no silver jewelry in that bag.

Storing Precious and Semi-Precious Stones

When it comes to storing precious or semi-precious stones, the best thing you can do is add some padding to your storage. You don't want these stones to become scratched by rough or hard surfaces, so you may want to wrap each piece that contains stones with a piece of soft polishing cloth.

Otherwise, store each piece based on the type of metal used for the bands or chains.

Cleaning Demi-Fine Jewelry

In addition to storing your demi-fine jewelry properly, it's helpful to know how to clean each piece. The approach you should use will vary depending on the materials used, which is why we've broken it down for you. Keep reading to find out how to clean all of your demi-fine jewelry.

Cleaning Sterling Silver

Most of the time, you can create a solution of lukewarm water and a gentle dishwasher detergent to clean sterling silver. Immerse the piece of jewelry in the solution for a few minutes and then remove it and dry and polish it with a soft polishing cloth.

If your sterling silver has reached a point where it is tarnished, you'll need to take a few extra steps. All you'll need is a dish, boiling water, aluminum foil, and a tablespoon of boiling water.

Line the dish with aluminum foil and place the piece of sterling silver jewelry in the dish so that it is touching the aluminum foil. Add the boiling water and baking soda to the dish. Allow the jewelry to sit in this mixture for about ten minutes before removing it and allowing it to dry.

Cleaning 18k Gold

To clean gold jewelry, you can stick with the warm water and dish detergent solution. Allow your gold jewelry to soak in the solution for about five minutes. Then, remove the piece and brush it lightly with a soft-bristle toothbrush (preferably a baby toothbrush, as these have the softest bristles).

After soaking and brushing your gold demi-fine jewelry, you can dry and polish each piece with a soft polishing cloth.

Cleaning Precious and Semi-Precious Stones

Once again, you can use a solution of warm water and dish detergent to clean your precious and semi-precious stones. You can also use your soft-bristle toothbrush to brush away any build-up of gunk or grime between the stones and their settings. Make sure to use light pressure when brushing your stones so that they don't become loose in their settings.

Are There Any Circumstances When You Shouldn't Wear Your Demi-Fine Jewelry?

Demi-fine jewelry pairs well with any outfit, whether you're going casual for the day or dressing up for the night. You're bound to get tons of compliments every time you wear your demi-fine jewelry!

Are there any times when you shouldn't wear these pieces? To preserve your demi-fine jewelry, it's best to remove it when you're bathing or washing your hands. If you're applying lotion or body oil, removing your jewelry will keep it from getting gunked up in the process.

Otherwise, you can wear your demi-fine jewelry all the time!
